Reich: Tehillim and Know What is Above You
5pm“Reich at 90”
Featuring Members of the University Symphony Orchestra and guests
Curated by Sarah Brailey, Anthony Di Sanza, and Oriol SansProgram: Reich: Music for Pieces of Wood; Reich: Know What Is Above You; Reich: Tehillim
Celebrating the 90th birthday of one of the most influential composers of our time, “Reich at 90” brings together three works that illuminate Steve Reich’s extraordinary musical imagination. From the hypnotic pulse of Music for Pieces of Wood to the intimate interplay of speech and music in Know What Is Above You, and the ecstatic energy of Tehillim, the program traces Reich’s lifelong fascination with rhythm, repetition, language, and the human voice.
Together, these pieces reveal the remarkable breadth of a composer who has continually expanded our understanding of what music can be: at once precise and spontaneous, ancient and modern, intimate and exhilarating.

Reich: Music for 18 Musicians
7pmSarah will be performing with the Steve Reich Ensemble
Trailblazing composer Steve Reich smashed musical boundaries by mixing together classical techniques with African drumming, jazz, and pop to pioneer minimal music. His Music for 18 Musicians made a massive impact when it landed in 1976, inspiring generations of musicians across experimental music, rock, and contemporary electronic music.
In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of its premiere and 90th birthday of the composer, this signal composition is staged by dynamic conductor and musical visionary Alan Pierson within the vast Wade Thompson Drill Hall. Three generations of musicians come together — the original Steve Reich Ensemble, exhilarating new-music ensemble Alarm Will Sound, and the next generation of musicians from the Manhattan School of Music performing as Tactus—in a production that expands the original work into a cycling, durational performance. Musicians encircle the listener, embodying the construction of the musical forms in an unprecedented immersive cycle, with an enlivening connective interlude by guest artist Caroline Shaw inspired by the iconic composition. The resulting ritual allows musicians and audiences to freely commune together with humanistic, contemplative, and ecstatic resonance, making space to hear the music anew and from within.
Approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes. Both General Admission and assigned seating options are available.
